Dirt Merchants [Maria Christopher [now with
27], Alex Kisch, John Malone and Mike Malone] were born during those halcyon days of the early 1990s when Boston was synonymous with the post-grunge "alterna" scene. The DMs released a handful of acclaimed singles (its called "Vinyl", kids) on their own V-Hold label. The full length "Scarified" was released on fledgling indie label Zero Hour in 1994, and was re-released by Epic Records in 95 after the group sold out to The Man.

After more than a year of A&R high jinx, long-distance van travel and some excellent bowling, the Merchants put the finishing touches on their true major label debut, "The Speed At Which You Speak," but Epic, deciding that there is indeed such a thing as too much of a good thing, shelved the album and showed the band the door. Luckily, the always industrious foursome had found the time to record the self-produced "Swiss Bank EP" between recording basics and mixing "Speed."

Enjoy.

Recording Notes: Basics were recorded with Tom and Rob at The Shop in beaucolic Arcata, CA in the fall of '96. Living on the sttudio grounds in this remote Humbolt County town, the band combined recoridng with games of horseshoes, dirt biking and dips in the nearby creek. The majority of the tracks had been written and extensively demo'd prior to the session, with the exception of My My My which was penned in the first few days of recording. Further overdubs and mixing was done at
Sunset Sound and Sound Factory in Los Angeles several months later.  The Horns of Mary Davis was a last minute addition, recorded on ADAT in one room while Rob & Tom mixed in another.

Recording Notes:
Beware of Dog, Desert Song and Twisted Circle were all recorded during the winder of 1992 at the DM's first recording sessionwith John Wood at his Bird Dog Studio in Allston, MA. The basics were recorded live on 1" 8-track, with the drums mixed down to 2-tracks. Beware of Dog, along with Mindfuck, woudl eventually be released as the A side of the band's first V-Hold single.

Toybox, recorded in 1993, was among the first tracks to be laid down on Wood's new 16-track machine at Bird Dog.

Mondo Gigantor and Pastiche were both recorded some time between 1995 adn 1996 in the Merchant's studio on 8-track ADAT. That's Mike on the keyboards.

Jingle Bells  was recorded in a single session on August 1, 1995 with engineers Pete Weiss and Brian Charles at their Zippah Studio in Brookline, MA for a Zero Hour Christmas compilation. The band arrived at the studio early in the day with little idea of how to approach the task at hand. After a quick bout of drinking, things got underway, and since Mike was the only one to recall the lyrics, he put down the vocal as a reference track. The results were so priceless that Mike's track was saved as the lead vocal. The middle Come All Ye Faithful interlude was basically just an excuse for Alex to play Pete's Jerry Jones baritone guitar. Brian Charles lends his voice to the Little Drummer Boy chorus.

The Merchants had been playing around with the old Exile class, (I Want To) Kiss You All Over for a while when they were asked to play a live set on Emerson College's WERS in 1995. This spontaneous set closer featured Mike on drums and John on Farfisa organ. If you listen closely, you can hear the DJ banging away on the piano at the song's conclusion. The recording actually made its way to the public as part of Epic's college radio sampler, and according to BMI radio tracking, received airply as far away as India.

While the original version of Headdress was recorded at Bird Dog, along with Toybox, this version was a re-worked arrangement, recorded with the Weiss/Charles tag team at Zippah in 1995, with Alex adding some mandolin. Headdress was included with Kiss You All Over as part of Epic's college radio sampler.

Aviatrix was recorded in February of 1996 at Zippah for inclusion on the benefit album "Safe and Sound." While the album eventually saw its release, Aviatrix didn't make the final cut (A later version of the song was recorded for inclusion on the ill-fated album "The Speed At Which You Speak").

In early 1995, the Merchants were asked to contribute a track to a Zero Hour tribute to Bruce Springsteen. The DM's contribution, an original take on Badlands, was recorded at Zippah in a single session. The track was constructed piece by piece around a drum loop. As well as contributing several guitar tracks, Mike plays bass and keyboards (including a backwards guitar solo!). Alex adds acoustic guitar heard at the song's conclusion. The tribute project itself never came to fruition.

These takes of Maricopa Oval and Castles Crumbling were self-produced demos recorded by the Merchants on 8-track ADAT in their studio in the spring of 1996. Castles evolved from Charlie, a regular part of the Merchant's live set; Maricopa, which would itself go through several transformations, has never been released.

Found It On A Tray and Opus Zero are fragments taken from various DM brainstorming sessions recorded sometim between 1994 and 1996 on their faith "Getch" portable cassette recorder. Maria's vocal on Found It On A Tray was actually in February 1997 at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, during the mixing session for "Speed."

Buttercream and Purple Barrel were both recorded live as part of an acoustic on-air set for WERS on April 14, 1996. Both tunes feature the banjo styling of guest Pete Fitzpatrick (Pee Wee Fist, Clem Snide, Phantom Power).

Disengage was the very last Dirt Merchants song to make it to tape. The basics were recorded in the DM's V-Hold studio in 1997 on ADAT. Maria laid down a final vocal track months later and the final mix was completed after Mike had resetttled in Chicago.

Recording Notes: Recorded by the DMs in their V-Hold Studio in the interim period between the initial recording and mixing sessions for "Speed" in the winter of 1996-97. The title track, Swiss Bank had gone through numerous transformations, which are evident in Another Account, featuring a boom box recordings of an early writing attempt. John Malone was truly the mastermind behind the record's recording and thematic structure, as well as the beautiful design.

Recording Notes:
Recorded at Boson's Fort Apache, Blue Jay and Squid Hell studios with Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, Possum Dixon, Morphine), the debut full-length's total budget was under $5,000.  Mindfuck was actually recorded by Carl Plaster on WMBR's legendary "Pipeline" show, and sounded so good it was issued as a single b/w Beware of Dog (see below). Critically acclaimed, the album, first relased by NY indie Zero Hour was later re-released by Epic Records.
